Chicago, “Love Will Come Back” from ‘Chicago XXX’ (2006): Saturdays in the Park

When I first heard 2006’s Chicago XXX, I couldn’t believe the band I had just gotten into released an album only two years later. What a treat!

I remember buying the album, and I couldn’t wait to listen to it. I ended up playing Chicago XXX three times in a row, and a number of songs left an impression in me – perhaps most notably, “Love Will Come Back.”

Written by Jason Scheff, Chas Sanford and Jay DeMarcus, “Love Will Come Back” is a beautiful country-pop ballad that inspires people to continue to look for love again and not let go until they find that perfect someone. There’s hope here for those trying to put their lives back together after things don’t go right:

Love will come back,
hit you when you least expect it.
Fill in the cracks of a broken heart
you thought that you could never mend.
You, you can start again!

The result is something deeply relatable to myself and others who haven’t found love yet but will never give up. I’m sure there is also meaning for people who haven’t had relationships work out and may want give up because they don’t think it’s worth trying again. “Love Will Come Back” encourages them not to stop looking. There’s always someone for you at the end.

Musically, this song is great mixture of Chicago and Rascal Flatts, both country and pop with an emphasis on the signature Rascal Flatts guitar and Chicago horn sound. I love the initial keyboards and piano, and Scheff’s voice during the introduction. It’s almost a mini-acapella moment, clear and perfect.

I love the key changes and transitions when “Love Will Come Back” hits the chorus. Jason Scheff, Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts and Bill Champlin did extremely well taking turns with the vocals. It all combines to create a beautiful country-pop ballad that gives people hope about finding love or being in love again.
