Ernesto Cervini Quartet, “Waiting For A Win” from ‘Water Pistols At Dawn’ (2026): Video premiere

Ernesto Cervini’s brand-new album Water Pistols At Dawn is a very youthful sounding record and for good reason: the drummer, bandleader and composer put together a new band full of up-and-comers in the thriving Toronto jazz scene. For Water Pistols, Cervini challenges his junior partners with a combination of originals and standards covering the gamut of straight-jazz to modern jazz with rock and fusion influences. They easily pass each test due to the energy and fresh chops they bring to the quartet.

The opening track gets things off on the good foot and so we’re pleased to present the video premiere above of the Cervini-composed tune “Waiting For A Win.” The title reflects, in Cervini’s words, “the anxiety of waiting for something good to happen,” and in this case, the waiting ends from the moment the performance begins.

The songs begins rubato-style declaration like a “A Love Supreme” does, with Kae Murphy’s trumpet making the declaratory statements. When the band surges into a loose but self-assured swing, guitarist Andrew Marzotto’s softened tone springing forth with one unique phrase after another contrasts with the feisty rhythm section of Cervini and bassist Mark Godfrew. Following that, Murphy returns to get his own hot licks in. Lastly, the veteran leader goes off with his own stimulating solo, never abandoning the brisk rhythm.
