He’s back, y’all.
Hammond B-3 king Delvon Lamarr and his tough Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio have recorded the long-awaited follow-up to their hot selling albums I Told You So (2021) and Cold as Weiss (2022). We don’t know the name of their latest burner yet nor when it drops, but there’s new DLO3 music available for the first time in over four years.
That’s because Colemine Records has released a single that should hold us over a bit until that new long player comes out. “Chicken Leg” on the A side and “If I Could” on the other side were pulled from the I Told You So and the upcoming album sessions, featuring Lamarr backed by rhythm maestro Grant Schroff and the incomparable Jimmy James (Parlor Greens) on guitar.
This new pair of tunes provides reassurance that success isn’t gonna change how Lamarr makes his music. For “Chicken Leg” he and James came up with yet another greasy funk riff to gnaw on, and the organist get his heated licks in before closing it out. “If I Could” is another Lamarr original but it’s very much in the style of a 60s soul ballad that would have ignited R&B radio stations back then as a vocal number. As it’s presented here, Delvon handily applies lyrical lines that makes this work just dandy as an instrumental.
“Chicken Leg” and the “If I Could” B-side are now out as a 7″ 45 single for you vinyl enthusiasts. Order it from Colemine Records.
