Canadian metal/prog veteran Mark Anthony K returns with the upcoming release from his brainchild Projekt Gemineye. The lead off song is, in fact, the title track of the album, Ordinary Day.
Projekt Gemineye quickly kicks things into high gear with swirling synth patterns and majestic guitar choruses and powerful double bass drum-fueled drumming. Two minutes into the song, the tight musical union gives way to a harmonized lead vocal which is buoyed by chunky lead guitar. There is a synth interlude before the second chorus which Rick Wakeman would have been proud to have utilized on Yes’ Tormato album.
The synthesizer tracks have a distinctive ’70s-era feel (think Wakeman, or Richard Wright of Pink Floyd), but the guitar crunch and double bass drum textures point to something distinctively heavier than prog. The lead vocals and lead guitar, all handled by Mark Anthony K, are expertly done yet passionate. There are even elements of a Hammond B-3, which push the track.
“Ordinary Day” makes a fine first impression of Projekt Gemineye. Even more impressive is that Mark Anthony K’s lyrics are vivid and provocative and his one-man-band approach bears a strange and satisfying fruit.
Projekt Gemineye’s “Ordinary Day” will be out in March.
