Kris Davis Trio, “The Subtext” from ‘Lost In Geneva’ (2026): sneak peek

The long, decorated history of jazz pianist, composer and bandleader Kris Davis is still writing compelling new chapters on the book of a restive, creative mind and technical savant.

Lost In Geneva (September 25 2026, 4166 Records) promises to be the latest of musical triumphs for Davis because she still attacks each project like she’s got something to prove. She’s in the midst of a new era for her; Lost In Geneva is the second record she’s issuing under her current Trio with bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. Handing the reigns over Pyroclastic Records — the widely respected jazz label she founded — to Nate Wooley, Davis has freed up more time for purely artistic endeavors and she’s not wasting the opportunity.

Just take in the second advance single in the video above from Lost In Geneva called “The Subtext” and you’ll hear what I mean.

All the great piano trios going back to Evans/LaFaro/Motian places larger roles on bassist and drummer than mere accompaniment and that’s very evident with the Kris Davis Trio. The three move dynamically as a unit, weaving through chord sequences that races through a maze with uncanny precision, weaving rhythm with harmony so tightly that no such line between them exists. Moreover, the fresh “The Subtext” is what acoustic jazz in the 21st century sounds like when it’s on its game.
