On Second Thought: Los Lonely Boys – Revelation (2014)

Today, the Texas blues rocking trio Los Lonely Boys release their latest studio effort Revelation. The three Garza brothers, hailing from San Angelo, Texas, first came to prominence with the release of their 2003 self-titled debut and 2004 hit single, “Heaven.” If you have ever been fortunate enough to catch the band live, as I have a few times, you will agree their CDs don’t fully capture the sheer power and virtuosity of their live shows.

Revelation does not change this trend. The album contains 12 all-original and well-crafted, well-produced songs. Henry Garza’s guitar is perhaps more restrained than prior albums, but the group’s tight, three-part harmonies are still intact. And the rhythm section of Jojo (on bass) and Ringo (drums) is as tight as you can find. The brothers also enlisted a diverse cast of co-writers from Black-Eyes Peas collaborators George Pajon Jr. and Keith Harris to Ozomatli guitarist Raul Pacheco. The results are solid, rhythmic Texas (or “Texican” as the band calls it) rock and roll.

The band doesn’t stray too far from its signature sound. While the lead off track “Blame It One Love” effectively hints at the band’s Mexican-American heritage, the song “So Sensual” mines familiar middle of the road territory. “Familia” adds a touch of the sharp blues playing from LLB’s lives shows and reflects hints of the rock-en-Espanol band Ozomatli. “Can’t Slow Down” shows the band’s effectiveness at grooving , while “Dream Away” tries to be the anthem of optimism on the album. “Rule the World” finds the band cranking it up and letting the rock fly before it all comes down to a quick end with the love ballad, “Everything About You”.

Over all, another solid effort from the band.

Los Loneley Boys are currently on the road bringing their fiery brand “Texican” rock to a city near you.
