*** STEELY DAN SUNDAY INDEX ***
“Lunch with Gina” flies along in full funk/rock mode. Guitarist Hugh McCracken and Jon Herington gleefully play along with the rock solid back beat laid down by Keith Carlock on drums and Walter Becker continues his trend of rock steady bass parts which fit just right.
Donald Fagen provides one of the most straight forward Steely Dan horn charts of recent years, bringing ‘Dan alum and jazz great Chris Potter in to blow his tenor sax with Michael Leonhart accompanying on trumpet. They work in perfect simplicity.
Surprisingly, Potter doesn’t get the solo. That is left to Fagen and his frenzied synthesizer.
The solo is a perfect match for the lyrics which tell the tale of a fatal attraction, lust and paranoid. I wonder if the songs is an old leftover from the early days or even a different take on the Fagen-only composition, “Lazy Nina.”
Yes, lyrically this is familiar Steely Dan fare to be sure, but well done.

Lunch with Gina is funky delicious. The last 4 songs of EMG stand up to any 4 song/recording stretch in the SD lexicon IMO. Donald gets his groove back leading to 2 outstanding solo efforts to come.
How true Doc Mu!
