Cidny Bullens’ new album Little Pieces is a musical gem that beautifully intertwines with the narrative from his autobiography, TransElectric: My Life as a Cosmic Rock Star. This album is a captivating journey filled with heartfelt lyrics and incredible melodies.
The opening title track is a twangy driving ditty, punctuated by Ray Kennedy’s ringing Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar and Bullen’s earnestly powerful vocal performance. “Walking Through This World” furthers the album’s narrative with introspective lyrics, offering a glimpse into Bullens’ personal journey as well as touching on elements that many of us feel who have at one time or another searched for our identity. Bullen’s near-spoken word delivery adds to the song’s gravitas.
“Crack the Sky” showcases his songwriting prowess, delivering a powerful message with a memorable melody and ringing lead guitar. “Not With You,” featuring Beth Nielsen Chapman, adds a personal touch by creating an emotional depth that resonates throughout Little Pieces.
“Healing the Break” is a poignant ballad that touches the soul with its heartfelt lyrics and emotional delivery. “The Gender Line,” also the name of Cidny Bullen’s short documentary, features Rodney Crowell. This standout track not only highlights Bullens’ musical talents but also delivers a powerful message about identity and self-acceptance. Deborah Holland’s contribution on “Sugartown” adds a unique texture to the album, showcasing the versatility of Bullens’ musical style.
The album’s production, by Cidny Bullens and Ray Kennedy, ensures a cohesive and polished sound, and recording most of the album’s basic tracks in Nashville brings out the best in this music. Little Pieces also features guitarist George Marinelli (Bruce Hornsby/Bonnie Raitt), keyboardist Mark T. Jordan, bassist Steve Mackey, drummer Lynn Williams. Bullens handles guitars, synths, harmonica and electric sitar.
