The Heavyweights Brass Band are physically in Toronto but spiritually they live way down in ‘Nawlins. As a collection of jazz heavyweights in town, the name makes a whole lot of sense. And for a quintet — four horns plus Lowell Whitty on drums — they sound big and brash.
The video we’re premiering above is the jumpin’ title track for the HBB’s upcoming fourth long player Stir Crazy. Whitty’s second line pulse can’t be denied and together with the pumping, low brass tuba of Tom Richards builds a firm foundation of Creole funk. No self-respecting New Orleans style brass band does it without a good trombone player, and that’s why they have a guy like RJ Satchithananthan.
When saxophonist Paul Metcalfe and trumpet man John Pittman trade licks, it’s quite obvious these guys bring serious chops to fun music.
It’s always a good time for brass-tastic party music, which means it’s always a good time for the music of The Heavyweights Brass Band.
Stir Crazy will be available to the public worldwide on November 5, 2021 by Slammin Media in partnership with Believe Distribution. Check ’em out at their website.
