A release date hasn’t been set for the new remaster of Emerson Lake and Palmer’s Live in Germany, recorded on June 24, 1997 at Munich’s Tollwood Festival, but here’s a free download to tide you over.
This MP3 is available now via whoohoolive.com featuring more than 15 minutes of music, as ELP performs a typically outsized medley of “Fanfare for the Common Man,” then “America” and finally “Rondo.”
If there’s any question about whether the second era of Emerson Lake and Palmer could hold its own with the first, this eye-poppingly muscular outburst of classically inspired prog rock puts such concerns to rest. Keith Emerson performs with an imaginative whirl, while Greg Lake and Carl Palmer provide the rock-hard foundation.
Midway through, Palmer engages into a torrential rhythmic interlude — only to regather himself and introduce the next phase of this amazing performance, as Emerson begins a perfectly bizarre exploration. At one point, Emerson is playing the keyboard upside down, with the heavy instrumental on top of him.
And to think, this is only a small portion of what the eventual reissue will hold.
