Yes, “Vevey” from ‘Going For the One’ (bonus track, 1977): YESterdays

Yes, I skipped Chris Squire’s pointless instrumental bass / bass pedal version of “Amazing Grace,” which was recorded around the same time as “Vevey.” Even Yes purists rarely listen to these two songs.

“Vevey,” which appeared on the rereleased and remastered edition of 1977’s Going For the One, ties together Part 1 and Part 2 from the Yesyears version of this Jon Anderson-Rick Wakeman instrumental. The results are more listenable, but not much more memorable.

Featuring Wakeman on church organ and Anderson applying his juvenile harp skills, “Vevey” would have made an interesting interlude on an Anderson/Wakeman duet album. At just over four minutes, however, it seems too long as a Yes song.

On second thought, dividing it into two parts as “Vevey” appears on Yesyears was probably the best strategy. Surprisingly, selections from the expanded reissue of 1978’s Tormato offer much more significant bonus-cut contributions to the Yes canon.
