David Starr continues his well-received foray into covers with an update of Van Morrison’s “Someone Like You,” which we’re exclusively premiering. The single, which drops on Feb. 11, picks up where prior songs like “These Days” and “Gotta Serve Somebody” left off.
Like those previous singles, “Someone Like You” is part of Starr’s upcoming 12-song Touchstones album. This project arrives hot on the heels of his pre-pandemic Beauty & Ruin album, produced by John Oates of Hall and Oates fame. Unable to tour in support of the release, Starr recorded a series of cover versions of songs that have influenced him along the way.
David Starr acted as co-producer with Mark Prentice, pulling together a comforting and warm sound from his small group of players. “Someone Like You” proves to be a perfect fit for Starr’s expressive boy-next-door voice and sympathetic arranging skills. The incorporation of Memphis-style backing vocals and a pleading pedal steel guitar further set the scene.
The result is an excellent addition to Touchstones, as Starr establishes a welcoming tone ahead of his album’s wider release.
