Kevin Godley has a solo album? Really? That name rings a bell. Yes! That Kevin Godley of the fantastic music enterprise Godley and Creme and of course, 10cc.
While Godley’s new project Muscle Memory won’t be out until December 2020, he’s started priming the pump – starting with the single “Hit the Street.” Surprisingly, Muscle Memory is the first time Kevin Godley has led a project under his own name – and he adopted a new songwriting process for it: Collaborators sent instrumental tracks to him, leaving Godley to flesh out lyrics, melodies and the thematic landscapes.
“Hit the Street” is an excellent example of this process. The progressive yet stark instrumental background recalls latter-day David Bowie. The finger-picked acoustic guitar, piano and synthesizer textures are deliciously dark.
Kevin Godley’s voice is like a fine red wine as he tells a tale of isolation, pain and loneliness. Hints of saxophone only add to the portrait of distance. “Hit the Street” is an intriguing first look into Muscle Memory and seems perfectly attuned to the mood in America.
Next, get ready for an intriguing fall and winter, as Godley releases at least seven more singles as a prelude to the new album.
