With Steely Dan chord progressions, sweaty African rhythms, soulful Gilberto Gil pop textures and just a quick hint of skronky guitar, “Ilha Dos Prazeres” (streaming above) can only come from the fertile, subversive mind of Arto Lindsay. A cultural concatenation of Afro-Brazilian psyche and Western gloss and the somewhat strange co-existence of the two, “Ilha Dos Prazeres” is Portuguese for “Of Pleasure Island.” And indeed, Lindsay sings the whole song in that language of his native Brazil in his breezy croon.
“Ilha Dos Prazeres” is just one many sources of fascination and beguilement — or should I say, ‘pleasure’ — to come from Cuidado Madame, Lindsay’s first full-length length of new material since Salt from 2004. Cuidado Madame is due out stateside on April 21, 2017 from Northern Spy Records.
Built upon the trance-like spiritual rhythms of the candomblé religion practiced in Brazil, Cuidado Madame includes contributions from Melvin Gibbs, Paul Wilson, Kassa Overall, Patrick Higgins, Ryu Takahashi and Thiago Nassif. Staying true to himself going back to his days in DNA, Lounge Lizards and Ambitious Lovers, Lindsay puts his musical schizophrenia of his caustic, saw-toothed avant-garde side and his warm, catchy side colliding together all on glorious display.
