Since Jon Anderson recovered from a series of ailments that led to his split with Yes, he’s been a fixture on the road — but only as a solo act, or in a duo format with former bandmate Rick Wakeman. That could be changing in 2014.
Anderson, who saw the band he co-founded replace him during that late-2000s convalescence, is ready for a return to collaborative work on a larger scale.
[MARCH 10, 2014 UPDATE: Jon Anderson, in an after-show talk with fans, revealed one of the members of his proposed band — and it’s a prog-rock and fusion-jazz legend.]
“I’m putting a band together for this year,” Anderson tells 94.5 The Arrow. “It’s in the planning stages. We’ve just been in touch with two or three people. It’s just a question of having a two-month window in the summer, and can we get together. I have this idea of what we could do. I’ve been doing some demos of what a band could be doing these days. You know, I’ve never stopped musically; I’ve just been out there doing solo work.”
Yes, which is on its second lead singer since Anderson fell ill in 2008, is current in the studio with producer Roy Thomas Baker. The band released Fly From Here, constructed around a leftover piece of material from 1980’s Anderson-less Drama project, in 2011 — not long after Anderson issued the solo project Survival and Other Stories. Since, Yes has been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, though they fell short.
As for getting back together with his old bandmates, Anderson adds: “Maybe next year, we’ll get into the Hall of Fame, and you never know, we might just go out and tour together. Life is like that. You can’t really say no, and never again.”
