Carl Palmer says Asia is continuing the demo process for its first album with guitarist Sam Coulson, even as plans are made for another series of shows in Asia and the U.S. next year.
That period of feeling out has led them away from the previously announced title of Valkyrie for the band’s first album without Steve Howe since 2006. Otherwise, things are moving smoothly along, Palmer says.
“We’ve got quite a few demos in place at the moment,” Palmer tells Jason Saulnier. “There’s about three are four which are kind of acceptable. We need to now turn them into proper pieces of music. We’ll look at all of that. We’re kind of going slow. We’ll probably work right up until about Christmas, and then take a break — and then start after that again. That’ll be ready for some time next year, though there’s no release date, and no real firm title.”
Palmer, Howe, Geoff Downes and John Wetton founded Asia in 1982, and Howe would eventually take part in five studio albums — including Asia’s mega-smash debut and 2012’s band anniversary effort XXX. Coulson took over the guitar chair later the same day that Howe announced this resignation last January.
Palmer, who also co-founded Emerson Lake and Palmer, says Asia will play dates in Japan in 2014, followed by summer dates in America. He will also bring his ELP Legacy band to the U.S., in March and May.
