They say that as you get older, the percecption of the passage of time can appear to accelerate. I can vouch for this though there are some differences on the short vs. long-term scale. While a year can feel like it passed (to use the old cliché) in the blink of an eye, there are days when just the passing of just an hour can seem much, much longer. That there may have been many interminable days doesn’t seem to change the fact that a year can seem to fly by.
And what does this have to do with my enjoyment of dirge-encrusted music? I don’t really know. I mean, I listen to various tracks from The Dead C’s Harsh 70’s Reality and I’m invariably drawn to them because they seem to fuck with time. On “Suffer Bomb Damage,” we have some psychedelic keyboard drones that are periodically subjected to huge, distorted guitar chords. The guitar is detuned and is emanating ominous chunks of distortion. It’s like Sunn O))) or Sonic Youth sitting around and listening to outtakes from The Doors. Or something.
For some reason, I find the entire effect comforting. But then again, I have almost always found distorted guitar comforting. Is that because it’s falling in line with earth’s resonance? I dunno, that sounds kind of earthy/utopian to me. Maybe I like it because it forces me to be present and to listen. That’s how you stop time, for a bit.
