Angie Wells, ‘Abbey Road Reimagined,’ William Shatner and others are part of the latest edition of Five for the Road, an occasional look at music that’s been in my car lately:
ANGIE WELLS – TRUTH BE TOLD (JAZZ VOCALS): This is an enchanting musical journey that showcases her exceptional talent and heartfelt storytelling. With the guidance of producer John Clayton, Angie Wells’ Truth Be Told strikes a perfect balance between soulful melodies and a few well-selected cover songs. One standout track is her cover of Nina Simone’s “Do I Move You,” which immediately grabs the listener’s attention with its infectious rhythm and powerful vocal delivery. Wells’ expressive voice beautifully conveys the emotions embedded in the lyrics, leaving a lasting impact on the listener. The song seamlessly blends elements of soul, jazz and R&B, creating a mesmerizing sonic experience. A small circle of assembled musicians brings out the best of Wells’ already heady compositions, while adding nuance to the covers. The collaboration between Angie Wells and producer John Clayton is undoubtedly a match made in musical heaven.
ABBEY ROAD REIMAGINED: A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES (ROCK/POP): Due on Aug. 18, the Fernando Perdomo-produced Abbey Road Reimagined combines a talented collection of artists, forward-leaning arrangements, and classic songs. “Come Together,” out now as a single, has a simmering feel provided by Pink Floyd vocalist Durga McBroom. The addition of Jackie Lomax and long-time Roger Waters guitarist Snowy White adds an unexpected blues vibe. Another key track is Albert Lee and Geoff Downes’ take on “Sun King,” featuring James Booth and the Return. Perdomo also gets stand-out contributions from Gregg Bissonette (“Carry That Weight”), Matthew Sweet (“Polythene Pam”) and Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (“Here Comes The Sun”). Perdomo wisely used his Rolodex, and the results will leave most Beatles enthusiasts satiated.
EUNMI LEE – INTROSPECTION (JAZZ): New York transplant Eunmi Lee’s first album is a musical journey filled with captivating melodies and thought-provoking compositions. Produced by the talented trombonist Alan Ferber, Introspection showcases Lee’s remarkable skills as a pianist and composer. Among the key moments is “Gimmick,” a vibrant and energetic piece demonstrating Lee’s ability to blend complex rhythms with catchy motifs seamlessly. Another notable track is “5.19,” a profoundly introspective composition that reflects Lee’s ability to convey emotion through her music while reflecting on her experiences interacting with new cultures. The result is a stunning debut, highlighting Eunmi Lee’s exceptional talent as a pianist and composer.
WILLIAM SHATNER – PONDER THE MYSTERY: 2023 REMIX (PROG ROCK): This unique and captivating musical experience was initially released in 2013, and has now been remixed and remastered for its 10th anniversary. Ponder the Mystery showcases William Shatner’s distinct speaking style, combined with progressive rock compositions. Collaborating with renowned musicians like Billy Sherwood of Yes, the album delves into existential themes and musings on the mysteries of life. Shatner’s unconventional approach may not be for everyone, but it brings a distinct charm and personality to the album. The musical arrangements are rich and dynamic, featuring elements of progressive rock, spacey synthesizers, and energetic guitar work. If you missed the original release, this update by Juergen Engler is worth checking out.
CALIBRO 35 – NOUVELLES AVENTURES (FUSION): Nouvelles Aventures is the sixth studio album of the Italian band Calibro 35. Known for its unique blend of funk, jazz, and cinematic sounds, Calibro 35 once again delivers a captivating musical experience. One notable aspect of Nouvelles Aventures is its ability to transport listeners to different eras and places. The band’s sound is heavily influenced by ’70s Italian soundtracks, which create a nostalgic and cinematic vibe throughout the album. Each track tells its story, evoking imaginations of thrilling adventures and suspenseful moments. The album is filled with infectious grooves and catchy melodies that will have you tapping your foot from start to finish. The musicianship displayed by Calibro 35 is exceptional, with skillful instrumentation and tight arrangements. From the energetic guitar riffs to the dynamic horn sections, every element is executed with precision and flair.
