Tol-Puddle Martyrs, “Mrs. Windsor” (2022): One Track Mind

An Australian band, Tol-Puddle Martyrs achieved regional stardom in the ’60s with ace singles such as “Time Will Come” and “Social Cell” that are now coveted collector’s items.

Tol-Puddle Martyrs split up at the end of the decade, but lead singer, songwriter and keyboardist Peter Rechter relaunched the band about 20 years ago. Since then, the resurrected Tol-Puddle Martyrs recorded several outstanding albums, which have not only been ecstatically endorsed by original fans, but younger generations of music buffs as well.

The band’s current single, “Mrs. Windsor,” steps in as a lovely tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and appears on the Secretdeals label.

Spurred by a strolling rhythm, chirpy melodies and brass instrumentation, the foot-tapping tune could rightfully be tagged as the missing piece from the Magical Mystery Tour album. Conceived with a definitive dance-hall finish, “Mrs. Windsor” dwells somewhere between “Penny Lane” and “Your Mother Should Know” before taking a left turn and dispatching a stream of fuzzy psychedelic flutterings.

“Mrs. Windsor” exudes style, class and a feel good vibe from pillar to post. Tol-Puddle Martyrs have always sported strong Anglophile tendencies, but this charming cut is especially replete with Beatles-esque splendor – of the 1967 variety, natch.

Tol-Puddle Martyrs are in the process of putting together a new album, so keep your eyes and ears open for more nimbly chiseled pop rock delicacies from this legendary band.
