Projekt Gemineye, “The Holy Shield” (2021): One Track Mind

Mark Anthony K has entered the conversation for the busiest man in rock. Taking on Yes’ Billy Sherwood or even Steven Wilson for that title is no small feat.

Still, with the final installment of his Projekt Gemineye trilogy, Mark Anthony K proves he can balance being a label head at Reficul Records and a collaborator with Joe Bailey in the hard-charging Dark Monarchy, while still bringing his epic vision around the In the Year of 3073 series to a satisfying climax.

We are a few weeks away from the full album. But if it continues the theme and musical glory of this first single, we are in for a treat. K’s lyrics are soaring and uplifting on “The Holy Shield.” His multitracked vocals cut through the layer of slashing guitars and retro-sounding synths like a stiletto.

Of course, Mark Anthony K provides plenty of grit in his guitar solos and effectively uses chorus guitar effects. Lyrically, the story picks up where In the Year of 3073: Book II left off. Things are looking better for our protagonist, and the song, which features label-mate Joe Bailey on bass, provides an intriguing and powerfully look into how Book III might end.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until early 2022 to hear the entire song cycle. Projekt Gemineye’s “The Holy Shield” is out now on Bandcamp.
