Both the original release and subsequent re-sequenced reissues of Toto’s 1999 album Mindfields featured the title track as the third song.
The first thing written by the entire group for this project, “Mindfields” boasts a deep groove from Simon Phillips and Mike Porcaro, with reggae-like synths and a deep-pocket rhythm guitar.
Bobby Kimball does the narrative justice as he exploits his lower register. The mysticism of the lyrics points to a Hydra-area feel, which is reinforced by the synth-flutes. David Paich provides the only solo on “Mindfields,” as Toto moves more toward jazz than prog.
Still, somehow all the elements work in support of a new yet familiar Toto sound.
