Toronto-based Noam Lemish is a veteran of the jazz scene there, even earning a JUNO nomination last year. But his music still retains the freshness of a newcomer. There’s beauty enough in being here is his latest fresh release, a quartet with Sundar Viswanathan (sax), Andrew Downing (bass) and Nick Fraser (drums) backing this accomplished pianist and composer.
In putting a spotlight on this solid collection of tracks, we’re premiering the video above of a performance of one of those tracks, “Aviv (Spring).”
Where some cuts on There’s beauty enough in being here exhibit a softened but crisp swing and others are quality, no-nonsense modern jazz, “Aviv” is a ballad that recalls the core ECM sound, rooted in Continental, classically-garnished jazz. It’s not that unlike Keith Jarrett’s European quartet, even. Viswanathan’s soprano sax is lyrically focused, pulling the inner elegance of Lemish’s composition out to the fore, and Downing’s bass feature does more of the same but in a more subdued way.
There’s beauty enough in being here, Lemish’s eighth album (including co-led releases) is now available everywhere. One place you can get it is from Bandcamp.
