Steve Lukather seems to be in a state of perpetual motion. Just off the road with Toto, and still backing up Ringo Starr, he’s also giving us a second look at his forthcoming solo album Bridges.
“Someone” was written by Lukather with long-time Toto bandmates Joseph Williams and David Paich, and boasts a sparse, contemporary feel. Williams provides keyboards with Paich, along with percussion and background vocals, while creating a very complimentary production that allows Lukather’s vocals to shine.
Paich and Williams’ keyboards are restrained and atmospheric. That’s not to say “Someone” doesn’t rock. Lukather’s bass is in the pocket and supportive, while his guitars are powerfully nuanced. Drummer Shannon Forrest adds a propulsive backbeat met by a soaring Lukather solo. Good stuff.
In a recent chat with Lukather, he mentioned that the album was effortless, completed in just three weeks. He said part of the reason for these productive sessions was working with Joseph Williams and a small group of friends. “Someone” reflects the high level of musicianship we expect from Steve Lukather, and great songcraft. It’s an effective tease for the eight songs on Bridges.
