“Mayhem,” the lead-off single from Godsticks’ sixth studio album This Is What a Winner Looks Like, is a fine representation of their progress since the progressive-metal heavyweight band’s recording debut in 2009.
Powerhouse drumming, thunderous bass, and guitars abound. Nuance is present too with evocative soloing and hook-laden and melodic vocals. Darren Charles weaves anger in mystery with his vocal approach, while the rest of the band navigates tricky time signature changes.
“Mayhem” is just that, with its almost addictive groove, relentless rhythm, and obtuse lyrics which beg for repeated lyrics. The combination creates a yearning anticipation for the entire album, as This Is What a Winner Looks Like is set to arrive on May 27.
