When I interviewed Steve Porcaro in 2018, he mentioned “Chase the Rain” was a then-new song that he was particularly proud of. Listening to the song on Toto’s Old Is New, it’s easy to see why.
Credited to Toto, the song has Porcaro’s melodic stamp all over it. Like the standout song “In a Little While,” “Chase the Rain” could have easily fit on Porcaro’s Someday / Somehow solo album in many ways. Porcaro’s lead vocal is strong yet tender, and the harmony by Joseph Williams is supportive without being intrusive.
With subtle lead guitars by Steve Lukather and ethereal keyboards, primarily by Steve Porcaro with a sprinkling of David Paich, Toto again creates something new. That’s quite an achievement for such a long-tenured band.
Given the proclamation that there’ll be no more new music from the band, “Chase the Rain” makes yet another compelling case for a second Steve Porcaro solo album.
