David Garfield has a long history as a premier writer, keyboardist, producer, and sideman. Fortunately for me, I didn’t discover his expansive catalog until he formed the fusion group Los Lobotomys which featured Jeff Porcaro, Will Lee, Carlos Vega, Lenny Castro and Steve Lukather.
After spending many years down the musical rabbit hole, I’ve discovered I’ve only touched the surface of Garfield’s brilliance.
“Hunting Heads” starts yet another chapter in his “Box” series. This time, David Garfield throws down seriously funky electronic jazz, employing clavinet, Rhodes-like electric piano and synthesizers in a musical call out to the great Herbie Hancock, who turns 81 on April 12.
Producer Erik Zobler was brought in to arrange and produce this fitting tribute to the jazz giant. Additionally, the deft fingers of Paul Jackson Jr. provide a funky and intoxicating hook, with a guitar part worthy of his legend.
But Garfield, with his evocative playing, is the glue and the magic on “Hunting Heads.” His piano soloing is memorizing, while the song powers forward over a tight rhythm section. It’s good stuff and an appropriate tease to the album, Stretchin’ Outside the Box, which hopefully is out soon. This preview single arrives on April 9.
