Chicago, “Man to Woman” from ‘Twenty 1’ (1991): Saturdays in the Park

Chicago’s “Man to Woman” is one of my favorite power ballads from Twenty 1. This song allows my mind to go into movie mode, as I imagine a scene with two lovers spending time together while following the melody and beat of the music together in unison. “Man to Woman” is one I can listen to over and over, and never get tired of it. It’s that beautiful.

Written by Adam Mitchell and Jason Scheff, “Man to Woman” is in my opinion about a couple who love each other and are now spending time together away from the world. As personal (sorry) and as sappy as this sounds, I get an image of them in bed together sharing a moment surrounded by candlelight. The man in the song explains how his significant other makes him feel, and he desires “to keep her warm” and make love to her.

Lyrically, this was a beautifully written song and done very poetically. I think Scheff and his co-writer did an amazing job with capturing the imagination and feelings of the listener. I like that there was a lot of alliteration and rhyming. It makes the song more appealing to listen to. For example, here is what I mean by using one of my favorite lyric lines:

“Girl, when the moon across the water starts to rise
I’ll be looking for tomorrow and I’ll see it in your eyes.”

Musically, there weren’t that many horns, but honestly, “Man to Woman” could have done well without the horns, in my opinion. Love the guitar and keyboard melodies throughout. The drumming was great and on the right pace. The bass playing was very prominent, matching every melody in it. Scheff played very well here, too.

I have been repeating the same thing in past reviews concerning Jason Scheff’s voice, but during his early periods with Chicago he always sounds sweet, young and on key. My opinion about his vocals don’t change on “Man to Woman.” I will say my favorite parts here are the belting “maaaan to woman” two times before the bridge. I also liked his vocals at the bridge, where Scheff belted:

“I want to hold you in the night
Can’t you see that I’m just livin’ for your light,”

This song is pure beauty. Perhaps “Man to Woman” is one of those really sappy songs to other fans, but to me it is a masterpiece. The lyrics were poetic and easily to understand. The music was great and done very well. I give it 9.5 out of 10.
