Following the release of his fourth studio album Sea Change in early July, Richard Turgeon knocked out a brace of cool cover tunes to keep his creative juices flowing. The San Francisco-based singer, songwriter and multi-faceted instrumentalist has now returned to the forum with an original effort, “Never Good Enough,” which also features the handiwork of bassist Ron Guensche and organist Tommy Carmine.
Directed at a cruel individual who thrives on confrontation, criticizing the narrator’s fashion sense and lack of fancy education, “Never Good Enough” paints a vivid portrait of the kind of nagging nitpicker we have all encountered at one time or another.
Promoting a champ country-folk sound reminiscent of bands like the Jayhawks and Wilco, “Never Good Enough” begins on a stark acoustic note before erupting into a fiery blast of hard-rocking glory framed of bruising riffs and slabs of driving organ chords. Richard Turgeon’s southern-sanded vocals are at the peak of their powers here, while a swaying melody provides the song with additional appeal.
Reining in as an engaging slice of heartland rock, “Never Good Enough” is definitely good enough to top playlists from coast to coast. Not only is Richard Turgeon impressively prolific, but the quality of his recordings remain reliably high – and this song certainly continues to affirm his artistic abilities.
