Jamie Hoover is a North Carolina-based multi-faceted music machine who has been an integral part of the international indie scene for four decades. Aside from his accomplishments as leader of the Spongetones, he is known as one-half of the Jamie and Steve duo, and for working with artists such as Bob Lind and Bill Lloyd.

Jamie recently teamed up with Otis Hughes, who played bass for the now-defunct alternative-metal band Animal Bag. Calling themselves the Stepford Knives, the fellows just released “Blue In the Face”/”I Don’t Want Her (Anymore),” their debut single, on Jamie’s Loaded Goat record label.

Pressed on bright blue vinyl, the disc announces the arrival of an adventurous collaboration. Jamie and Otis may come from different musical backgrounds, but the blending of their influences in Stepford Knives produces agreeable results.

Ringed with a soulful bent, “Blue In the Face” features Spongetones guitarist Steve Stoeckel strumming a ukulele, giving the song an appealing hook and a catchy rhythm.

A poppier approach materializes on “I Don’t Want Her (Anymore)” that emphasizes Jamie’s British Invasion roots, before reeling off a heavy duty jam rocking with a raw intensity. Hypnotic harmonies also highlight the track.

In view of “Blue In the Face”/”I Don’t Want Her (Anymore),” Stepford Knives have a mighty good thing going. Those who like pop greased with a dash of funky grunge, will take an immediate shine to the pair’s vision.
