Rickie Lee Jones has something to say on her upcoming release, The Other Side of Desire. That’s not to say she hasn’t had much to cover with her prior releases. In fact, Rickie Lee Jones has never been one to rest on her laurels or stand still — even when some of her fans wish she would.
The difference with The Other Side of Desire, Rickie Lee Jones’ first release of new original material in 10 years, is that Jones is examining where she is now. Judging by the single “Jimmy Choos,” she is in fine form.
As evocative and elegant as anything Jones has done, the song is also slightly gritty — leaning more on a laid back, New Orleans rhythm rather than Jones’ more familiar jazz/rock/folk stylings. It’s both familiar and different.
Additionally, Rickie Lee Jones’ voice has lost none of its power and nuance on The Other Side of Desire, due on June 23, 2015. Meanwhile, producer John Porter keeps things modern and moving, but never steps on Jones’ mojo. Her space is respected, and on “Jimmy Choos” she shines.
