Andrew Drury, “Keep The Fool” from Content Provider (2015): Something Else! exclusive stream

One of the truly visceral and imaginative drummers of our time, Andrew Drury has applied his other-worldly talents to the music of Myra Melford, Jason Kao Young, Eyvind Kang and Brad Mehldau. I think of Drury primarily as the drummer for Totem>, arguably the most mind-blowing trio on Earth.

That all said, Drury’s unique artistry is best manifested in works under his own name, and come February 17, 2015, we’ll be treated to two facets of him with the simultaneous release of the quartet excursion Content Provider and the solo floor-tom exhibition The Drum.

On the former, Drury heads up a combo featuring Brandon Seabrook on guitar with Briggan Krauss and Ingrid Laubrock on saxes. The lack of a bass gives Drury the freedom to stretch across a wider range of timbres, and that range is on full display for the opening track of Content Provider, “Keep The Fool.”

In the SER exclusive stream above, Seabrook is on an experimental rock plane while Krauss and Laubrock operate from a jazzier place. Drury ties the two opposing forces together with twisting rhythms and well-timed accents using the full palette of his kit, but there’s nothing heavy-handed about his approach.

Catch Andrew Drury at Roulette in Brooklyn on February 17th when he celebrates the release of both new albums with a celebratory concert.
