Remember 1987? That year, within a span of a few months, David Gilmour’s edition of Pink Floyd released a new album on the heels of a tandem Roger Waters solo effort.
Look for the same embarrassment of riches again soon. Waters has announced his first solo album in more than two decades and — what do you know? — Gilmour says he’s got new music on the way, as well. That’s how it worked in ’87, when Waters released Radio KAOS the summer before Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
Waters has since only released one other rock album, 1992’s Amused to Death, while Gilmour led Floyd through 1994’s Division Bell then released a solo effort in 2006 called On an Island.
This new Gilmour album will share an important link with his most recent disc, as Graham Nash and David Crosby will again serve as guest singers. In fact, that’s how the news of Gilmour’s forthcoming album broke — when Nash discussed their involvement in the project.
Crosby and Nash, of course, provided background vocals on the title track for On an Island, which went platinum in the UK and Canada on the way to a Grammy nomination for rock instrumental.
They also joined Gilmour on select tour dates in support of the album, appearing on the concert souvenir Remember That Night which followed in 2007. That live set featured some of the final performances by Gilmour’s underrated Pink Floyd bandmate Rick Wright.
Nash, in an interview with vintage.tv, also revealed that the duo was so excited to work with Gilmour again that they’re donating their time.
“What the hell would it cost you to have David Crosby and Graham Nash getting on a bloody train to Brighton to sing with you?” Nash asks, rhetorically. “We’re musicians. We love good songs. We’ll sing them until we are dead.”
