As a Beach Boys splinter group featuring original contributors Al Jardine, David Marks and Brian Wilson continues a summer tour, it’s stirring up a host of new memories.
For Jardine, the concerts — there have already been three stops, with another in Ohio tomorrow — take him back to the Beach Boys’ earliest days.
Back before the acrimony with Mike Love, who still leads his own version of the Beach Boys after a reunion tour in celebration of the band’s five decades ended badly. Back, Jardine adds, even before their big hit records.
“There’s nothing like it,” Jardine says of being on stage with Wilson and Marks, in this video. “It’s like recording them for the first time, when we all got together and put the harmonies down. It reignites that whole thing. Actually, it’s like going back before that — going back to rehearsals, which I always enjoyed the most. That’s what it feels like. It feels like doing a studio recording.”
Appearing with Wilson inevitably sparks thoughts of his late brothers, both of whom made important contributions to the Beach Boys’ sound, as well.
“I think of Carl every night when we do ‘God Only Knows,’ Jardine adds. “We even have a film of him performing it, along with us on stage, for our 50th anniversary tour. We’re also doing one of Dennis’ songs, called ‘Little Bird Up in a Tree’ – a cute little song about life.”

This incarnation is much more “Beach Boys” than the Mike Love incarnation that’s currently touring under that moniker.
For most Beach Boys fans, “our prayer” is for the 50th reunion group to reunite. The bickering is sad. BUT, if you had asked me in 1968 when Do It Again was climbing the charts if I expected to hear new Beach Boys music and see a live show with even one Beach Boy 45 years later – no way! ~ so, Aren’t you glad?
