Sparks Fly On E Street: Bruce Springsteen, “Better Days” (1992)

When I first listened to “Better Days,” I got the feeling that Bruce was going to be alright…and that the E Street Band would be back one day. Was I worried about him?

Well, like a lot of fans, we weren’t really sure what was up with the whole gettin’ married/firing the E Street Band/going off the musical grid thing. We didn’t have the microscope of the Internet back then (probably a good thing) so in reality none of us knew what was going on.

The truth is that none of us really knows why Springsteen makes the decisions that he does. If you follow the chatter on various fan sites, there are many people whose certainly about Bruce’s motivations is laughable.

They use their bits of pure conjecture to prop up their sour outlook.

All I know is that this sentiment — I got a new suite of clothes and a pretty red rose
And a woman I can call my friend
— brought home the fact that Mr. Springsteen was just like everybody else: a love that’s true and centered allowed him some peace. It’s what everybody desires.
