Here’s an exclusive stream of the Fabulous Thunderbirds’ “I Want to Believe,” the sizzling advance single from their upcoming Severn Records debut On the Verge. The album is due in Europe on February 19, 2013, and in the U.S. on March 19.
Anchored, as always, by Kim Wilson, the Fabulous Thunderbirds are exploring their more soulful side on this new 10-song original release. The vocalist and harp-player is joined by Johnny Moeller, guitarist with the band since 2007, along his brother drummer Jay Moeller, guitarist Mike Keller and bassist Randy Bermudes.
The Staples Singers-meet-Lenny Kravitz vibe of “I Want to Believe” is just the beginning of this fun ride. Together, they reference O.V. Wright on “Too Much Water,” the Los Lonely Boys on “Lovin’ Time,” Stax sounds with “Lonely Highway,” and even reggae with “Hold Me.”
On the Verge is the Fabulous Thunderbirds’ first new studio release since 2009’s Thunderbirds!, though that was sold only at their shows. The Best of the Fabulous Thunderbirds: Early Birds Special followed in 2011. Before that, Painted On, produced by Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, was issued in 2005.
Though Wilson and the early Thunderbirds — which featured Jimmie Vaughan on guitar — initially found fame with 1986’s “Tuff Enuff,” the group had been issuing well-received albums going all the way back to 1979. But they’re still best remembered for “Tuff Enuff,” a Top 10 hit. “Wrap It Up,” the following single, went to No. 50 as well.
Vaughan went solo in 1989, recording an album with brother Stevie Ray Vaughan a year later. He was replaced, initially, by Duke Robillard. Over the years, the Fabulous Thunderbirds also featured guitarists including Kid Ramos (who had a lengthy tenure from 1993-2002), Troy Gonyea and Nick Curran.
Wilson started his own tandem solo career in the early 1990s.
