Chris Squire confirms that Yes won’t be returning to the studio until at least 2014, and that a new tour won’t perhaps be the last to feature performances of complete albums from their legendary past.
Yes announced in December that its next dates would include sequential takes on The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going for the One, each of them from the band’s 1970s heyday.
1971’s The Yes Album saw the addition of Steve Howe, while 1977’s Going for the One found Rick Wakeman returning for the first time in three years. 1972’s Close to the Edge would rise all the way to No. 3 on the album charts. Complete dates and venues for this new concert series are below.
Squire tells Robert Cavuoto of Guitar International that members of Yes are working separately right now in preparation, and that the group will convene for an intense one-week training camp before starting the new tour. He said he’s expecting the most difficulty to come with the seldom-played track “Turn of the Century,” from Going for the One.
[ONE TRACK MIND: Yes’ Chris Squire stopped by to chat about songs from his career with Yes, as well as collaborations with Steve Hackett and Jimmy Page.]
As for a new album, the potential follow up to Yes’ 2011 comeback recording Fly From Here, Squire had indicated in a talk with Something Else! that the group was considering a quick return to the studio with new frontman Jon Davison in 2013.
Now, just days after Yes drummer Alan White expressed his own reservations, Squire has backed away from that timeline, as well.
“We’re gonna see how this works for us with these three albums,” Squire tells Guitar International. “The logical thing might be to look at a different three albums. We’ll see how this one goes. We will also probably be looking at doing some new material next year. We’re planning on recording a brand new album. That will probably be the focus in 2014.”
