Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, still apparently amped up about playing with Sir Paul McCartney during the 12-12-12 concert and on Saturday Night Live, has started thinking about other unlikely pairings. How about David Lee Roth?
Yes, that David Lee Roth, from Van Halen.
Now on hiatus, as Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen recovers from a nasty case of diverticulitis, Roth would certainly be available. And, ultimately, it might make just as much sense as jamming out with the ex-Beatle — a combination that was winkingly called Sir-vana by one wag.
[SOMETHING ELSE! REWIND: Earlier this year, we remembered the day ex-Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain killed himself, along with the whole grunge movement, saying: “So what?”]
Problem: Despite Novoselic’s enthusiastic endorsement in an interview with the Daily Beast, drummer Dave Grohl — who formed the Foo Fighters after Nirvana’s split — has called any talk of a reunion “nonsense.”
That’s what we all said about the McCartney rumors too, though, right? Then came the mash-up jokes (a favorite: “Smells Like Eleanor Rigby“) and, of course, a pair of actually very credible performances with Sir Paul.
Imagine the dynamic with Roth replacing the late original frontman Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994. Don’t you think “Lithium” could use a little more spandex-wearing karate kicks?
Either way, something would have to happen quickly. Van Halen is set to resume touring in 2013.
As for Novoselic, he says: “I love David Lee Roth. I would tour with David Lee Roth because I think he’s great. And it wouldn’t be some oldies review: if we put a band together and we were making music and we felt good about it – and there was that passion and that spark. I’d do it in a second.”

He never said he’d tour with David Lee Roth AS NIRVANA. He said if they were MAKING MUSIC. NEW MUSIC.
This article is stupid.
The article didn’t say he’d tour with David Lee Roth as Nirvana, either. #readingisfundamental
“Imagine the dynamic with Roth replacing the late original frontman Kurt Cobain”
Uh, if that doesn’t imply “touring as Nirvana” I don’t know what does.
Looking back, I certainly can see now why you were so upset. The very implication! Any other subtexts you’d like to explore? Care to take a similar stand on behalf of the spandex community, which might have their panties in a similar twist?
I really wish people could comment about necessary corrections without acting like total douches, but such is the nature of the angry/smug Internet commenter.
