It’s tough not to love the delicious sexual tension that builds during “I’m On Fire.” The original video (see below) had our man playing the role of an auto mechanic, obsessing over the gorgeous woman who’d just dropped off a (perhaps even more gorgeous) vintage Thunderbird.
That video always reminds me of my first post-college job and a woman who used to work in the marketing department. She was tall, wore tight pencil skirts, and drove a beautiful pearl-white Corvair. The parking lot held hundreds of cars so we — by “we” I mean the engineering dweebs who shared the corporate office with sales and marketing — considered ourselves lucky when we happened to witness her entry or exit from that vehicle.
At the time though, I couldn’t identify with the implications of a sugar daddy and the building lustful momentum that might lead to transgression. Hey, I was only a kid and hadn’t yet experienced the implosion of a relationship. That would happend all too soon.
