Young Gun Silver Fox, “Stevie & Sly” (2025): One Track Mind

Nostalgia for 70s and early 80s melodic soft rock has always been the driving force for the multi-talented duo Young Gun Silver Fox. Here’s a fresh new tune from them that makes that nostalgia explicit.

Anyone with just a passing knowledge of music from that era knows just who “Stevie & Sly” — the title for this trip down memory lane — is and those are just a couple of iconic names that dominated the charts while blazing trails during the wobbly Watergate/immediate post-Watergate era.

Driven by a supple bass line and a pulsating Rhodes, YGSF crafts another yacht rock-styled gem with their signature elements of conciseness, clean production and hooks galore. They just released not just the “Stevie & Sly” single but the accompany video above, a real charmer with singer Andy Platt seemingly feeling adrift in the present time. He finds the bliss he’s looking for whenever he sees the more colorful, less complicated world as it was fifty years ago whenever he puts on vintage shades given to him by the character played by the Silver Fox of the duo, Shawn Lee.

“Take me back to Stevie and Sly/Take me back to 1975” is the clarion call sung in the chorus and resonating in that four-on-the-floor groove. The smack-dab middle of the “me” decade has conjured up wistfulness in song before: acid jazz giants Incognito took that nostalgia trip in 2010. Leave it to Young Gun Silver Fox to conjure up that old feeling again with intent and craftsmanship.

For now, “Stevie & Sly” is the first finished track from Young Gun Silver Fox’s upcoming fifth album, as yet not officially named. We’ll pass along the details on their next long player as we find out more.
