Michael Attias, “Avrils” from ‘Quartet Music Vol. II- Kardamon Fall’ (2024): Streaming premiere

Michael Attias brings together his rich life experiences from Israel, Europe, Minneapolis and NYC together into a provocative, fresh release and an attractive new song from it. The loosely flowing, edit-free Quartet Music Vol. II- Kardamon Fall (Out Of Your Head Records) will be his second long player this year alone, the more meticulous Quartet Music Vol. I: LuMiSong have come out last March.

For Vol. II, the alto saxophonist Attias retains the pianist from the earlier record — the Argentinian Santiago Leibson — and replaces the rhythm section with bassist Sean Conly and Tom Rainey behind the drum kit. The instrumentation remains the same but there’s a world of difference in Attias’ approach, due to both the personnel change and the material he came up with for these sessions.

In the stream premiering above, Attias applies his mastery of blending jazz with Post-Romanticism Classical to the emotionally poignant “Avrils.” Attias tells a stirring story through his alto with Leibson in close support. Rainey delivers sensitive percussion, adding tonal colors that match the sentiment of Attias’ harmonic intent. Conly’s carefully delicate bass solo is a bonafide centerpiece of this performance.

Michael Attias’ Quartet Music Vol. II- Kardamon Fall will go public on October 18, 2024 and will be available through Bandcamp.
