Jon Dawson, who is recognized as ringleader of the cool indie bands Third of Never and Electric Forgiveness, has crafted a solo album that rests at quite a different angle than the rocking power pop he is known for.
A 15-track all-instrumental collection, Misophonia is performed at a mellow and measured pace. The gentle ping of a piano, escorted by tinkling glass, whistling birds and doors opening and closing are some of sounds employed on this fascinating foray into what is commonly classified ambient or mood music. Fans of Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream should also take note.
The offerings on Misophonia – which bear intriguing titles like “Vacant House Party,” “Lost In the Grocery Store,” “David Lynch Owes Me Money” and “Mercury Retrograde” – glide right into each other, fostering a feeling of floating on air. Minimal arrangements and unconventionally mesmerizing melodies add a heightened sense of surrealism to the picture.
A soul-soothing venture, Misophonia is guaranteed to put listeners into a meditative state of mind. Good for Jon Dawson for stepping outside the box and creating such a daring piece of music. Mission accomplished, indeed!
