Jeff Oster, with Chuck Rainey + Bernard Purdie – Next (2015): Something Else! sneak peek

Jeff Oster, as we’ve seen from his collaborations with and guest spots for guitarist Carl Weingarten, is a flugelhorn player who is masterful practitioner of New Age/ambient/chillout music. His jazz background endowed him with the improvisational skills to set him apart in this field, and Oster also appreciates a good groove.

Following up on his latest full album, the acclaimed Surrender (2011), Oster is gearing up to release Next in the spring of 2015. Here, he’s reunited with guitarist and Windham Hill founder Will Ackerman, who produced this album as he did for a couple of Oster’s prior albums Released and True. Weingarten will likewise be on board for this disc.

Also appearing on this album is bass legend Chuck Rainey along with drum legend Bernard Purdie. That’s right, people, a New Age recording with the rhythm section from Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne.” The video above gives us only some rough cuts from the upcoming LP, but beginning at the 2:47 mark is footage of Chuck and “Pretty” doing their funky thing with Jeff Oster’s horn audibly floating on top of it. This is a crazy idea that just might work.

We’ll check back on this again when the finished product becomes available.
