Jeremy Spencer had hoped to mount his first major U.S. tour since his glory days as a co-founding member of Fleetwood Mac, but it wasn’t to be. Spencer has cancelled, citing illness. He was in Fleetwood Mac between 1967-71, helping to produce four albums in the band’s blues-focused Peter Green-led era — including Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 1968 debut; Mr. Wonderful, Then Play On and, finally, Kiln House.
The now 65-year-old Elmore James acolyte announced a fan-funded 30-show concert series, set to begin in Long Beach, California, on Wednesday. However, a publicist tells the Press-Times in Long Beach that Spencer was returning to Ireland, where he lives with his wife, for medical treatment. In a prepared statement, Spencer said he was “distraught” over having to postponed what he hoped would be a “memorable tour.”
There was no immediate announcement on rescheduling the dates. Also left unanswered were questions about refunding contributions made to support the Spencer tour.
Some $10,446 had been raised through Monday evening via Kickstarter, where Spencer was soliciting funds for initial expenses on the road — as well as the future release of a new studio effort called Coventry Blue. That album, Spencer’s first since 2012’s Bend in the Road, was reportedly set for release on March 1.
