The psychedelic influence of Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett is undeniable with Bipolaroid, especially in the presence of singer-guitarist Ben Glover.
Most of the tunes on Twin Language sound like Barrett, circa 1967, albeit with a more heavy 1960s guitar-oriented garage sound. That’s in sync with today’s low-fi aesthetic, versus the heavy organ/guitar trade-off which was a Floyd staple during Barrett’s tenure.
Meanwhile, the mid-tempo “Love You Not” combines Syd’s solo penchant for more abstract lyrics with his Pink Floyd-era band-oriented music. The single “Efflorescent Adolescent” features a series of psych lyrics that drive this tune into the stratosphere. These guys don’t let up in their rocking manic energy all the way through the record, as exemplified on “Get Off My Fence.” “Merry Xmas” could be an unreleased Floyd classic, like “Vegetable Man” in disguise as a demented Yuletide song.
However, over the course of Twin Language, there is a sameness that creeps in. A little more variety would’ve been welcome, both in terms of tempo and the singer’s delivery.
