‘We started to look like chorus girls’: Paul Stanley on that time when the Kiss costumes went wrong

There have been, of course, subtle changes to the Kiss costumes over the years — most of which have been well received. Still, the period surrounding 1979’s Dynasty stands out as a garish misstep.

It wasn’t just that Kiss now sported color-coded additions meant to coincide with the individual member’s earlier released solo albums. Everything suddenly turned frilly, glittery — and (aside from Gene Simmons’ laughably cheap-looking Godzilla boots) all together too fluffy.

This was completely over the top — something that’s difficult to do with this group, to say nothing of the disco era.

Even Stanley agrees.

“I didn’t like the Dynasty stuff,” Stanley tells the Classic Rock Society, “because I thought it almost looked like Disney. It was too Vegas-y for me. We started to look a little like chorus girls, or something.”

I’m not sure I agree that this was the single solitary misstep for KISS.
