‘He didn’t have my number’: Paul McCartney laments missed telegram that halted work with Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis

Paul McCartney still wonders at what might have become of a musical collaboration with Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis — creating perhaps the unlikeliest of supergroups — but for a misplaced telegram.

Hendrix sent the communication to the Beatles’ offices at Apple Records on October 21, 1969, in the hopes that McCartney would play on a New York session that was also to include Davis and his drummer Tony Williams.

“That,” McCartney says in this new Howard Stern clip, “would have been cool.”

To say the least. Hendrix’s telegram, by the way, is now part of the Hard Rock Cafe’s permanent collection of memorabilia.

“I didn’t know that ’til just the other day,” McCartney says. “Somebody showed me a telegram, as it was in those days — and it was true! But he didn’t approach me personally. He didn’t have my number, for some reason, and I didn’t have his. So he approached some office guy, who then sort of said: ‘Sorry, he’s away.'”

Davis never recorded with Hendrix, either, though in his 1990 autobiography the legendary trumpeter said he had planned to during a trip to Europe at the time of Hendrix’s untimely death in 1970.
