For Al Jardine, the family friend who was there as the Beach Boys originally formed, last year’s emotionally charged breakup after a 50th anniversary celebration still stings. Jardine has moved on to tour with fellow original members Brian Wilson and David Marks, but the scar remains.
In fact, he says there’s a part of him who still wishes Mike Love — who has continued on with a scaled-down version of the Beach Boys show — was still a part of things.
“I just wish he was here performing with us right now,” Jardine says in this clip, “but he prefers to tour under his own logo as the Beach Boys. That’s really, to me, the biggest tragedy of all — that he doesn’t want to sing with Brian, David and myself.”
This trio of Beach Boys alumni has been joined on their on-going shows by Blondie Chaplin, who took the lead vocal on the band’s “Sail On Sailor,” as well as guitar icon Jeff Beck. They’re appearing on nearly a dozen more dates in North America through the end of the month.
Jardine says he’s thrilled to see a completely rejuvenated Brian Wilson on this tour, despite the messy split with Love that proceeded it.
“This is where we thrive,” Jardine adds. “This is where it all pays off, playing live. That’s why we’re here. He loves it. He sits and listens to the band warm up, and then we’ll go up and do our parts. Then we do a little meet and greet, after rehearsal, where we sign autographs. It’s really a wonderful experience.
