Steve Porcaro with Jude Cole, “2x Lover” (2025): One Track Mind

“2x Lover” featuring Jude Cole is the next single for Steve Porcaro’s highly anticipated second solo album The Very Day. Written by Porcaro and Cole, the song is a showcase not only for their songwriting but also a powerful reminder of Porcaro’s producer skills.

Unlike his brilliant first album, which was overseen by the late Michael Sherwood, The Very Day features Porcaro in the producer’s chair. The resulting songs released thus far have a decidedly middle-of-the-road feel. That’s not a criticism, however. Porcaro avoids the formulaic leaning on his melodic sensibilities.

“2x Lover” features Cole as lead vocalist with expertly arranged backing vocals from Porcaro, Jason Scheff, Francesca Falcone and Michael McDonald. Cole’s delivery of the vivid and relatable lyrics is spot on. The rhythm section features Shannon Forest on drums, Porcaro on synth bass, and Lenny Castro on percussion, and they deliver the bottom end with enthusiasm.

Steve Porcaro’s piano and synthesizers are subtle yet essential, and he adds a supportive and tight horn arrangement to provide a distinctive West Coast vibe. Former Lodgic guitarist Jimmy Haun and first-call session guitarist Michael Landau lend their talents too, adding to the vibe and enhancing what is already a joyous performance.
