Steve Porcaro helped make this summer extra special by releasing the first single from his upcoming album The Very Day. “Miss Jane Sinclair” is a delightful follow-up to 2016’s Someday/Somehow.
Porcaro steps into the producer chair previously filled by the late Michael Sherwood, delivering a hook-laden track hinting of his prior solo work and his stellar contributions to the last Toto album, Old Is New. As co-writer, Porcaro enlisted David Kemp, who shares his pop sensibilities. Porcaro also delivers one of his best vocals, providing a smart, earnest narrative.
Former Chicago bassist Jason Scheff delivers subtle high tenor backing vocals. First call guitarist Mike Landau’s lead licks are economical and tasty, as are the Porcaro-arranged horns, which feature Larry Williams and Joe Sublett on sax, Chuck Findley and Mark Pender on trumpet, and Andy Martin on trombone.
“Miss Jane Sinclair” is a delightful hint of things to come when Steve Porcaro releases The Very Day on Oct. 3.
