Sylvester James Jr., better known as Sylvester, left us on Dec. 16, 1988. Thankfully, however, we’re still discovering gems from the disco icon years after his untimely death.
“Body Strong” from the upcoming release Live at the War Memorial Opera House / 1979 finds Sylvester and his high-energy band at the top of their game. The album drops on Sept. 6 via Craft Records, but this advance song arrived just before the end of Pride month. Collaborating with now-iconic backing vocalists Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes (known as Two Tons of Fun), Sylvester exceeds expectations with his powerful falsetto.
The song bursts with an infectious rhythm that is both danceable and uplifting. Sylvester’s soulful vocals are the highlight, delivering each line on “Body Strong” with passion and finesse that perfectly complements the pulsating beat. The production is polished, with a strong bass line, driving percussion, and shimmering synths that create a rich, layered soundscape.
The lyrics are empowering and celebratory, encouraging listeners to embrace their strength and vitality. The chorus is particularly catchy, and it’s easy to imagine the song filling dance floors with its irresistible groove. “Body Strong” is a testament to Sylvester’s vocal prowess and his ability to create music that resonates with joy and liberation.
This is a track that stands the test of time, maintaining its appeal and energy decades after its release. “Body Strong” is also a reminder of what a force Sylvester was and the impact he still has.
